Have Scientist Failed Us?

Scientists generally insist that all phenomena can be described, in principle, in terms of measurable quantities which can be calculated using simple mathematical laws, thus reducing the universe to a mechanism and humans to complex sub mechanisms whose will and feeling correspond nothing more than patterns of chemical interaction among molecules. The vast majority of these scientists are bent on eliminating the concept of God from all descriptions of reality and its creation. However, the question remains can we describe every phenomena with numbers and chemical equations? Can we control the effects of our own inventions? Are we drowning in our innovations?

With the invention of automobiles, air pollution is threatening humanity, the industrial revolution has brought air and water pollution, the green revolution has introduced innumerable poisons into our food system, advances in physics have brought about the nuclear threat and possible holocaust, appliances and other modern amenities have inadvertently spawned drunkenness and obesity with urbanization the breakdown of morals, ethics and mental stability.

Even with the advances in medical cures, new and incurable diseases have only increased. It seems that the goals of knowledge and pleasure have not yet been achieved.

It is often found that scientists are biased in their search for the truth, giving preference to evidence which supports their desired thesis and unscientifically rejecting alternative theories as unsuitable without proper consideration. Is it true though?

The Creation Theory

Although scientists are subject to the four defects of all human race, namely, bhrama, pramada, vipralipsa and karanapatava, (their mistakes, are subject to illusion, have cheating propensity and defective perception), their findings when presented with some sort of verifiable experimental proof, are accepted as factual descriptions of reality. (Science and God.) This means that the creation theory is heavily based on the four defects of humans.

Theories of creation, formulation of life and evolution cannot be adequately proven and they do not produce substantial evidence in describing  the reality. Scientists have not provided us with adequate answers to the fundamental questions about the universe, galaxies, supernovas, string theory, cosmology, upper dimensions among others.

It is too often that scientists forcibly assume that their laboratory experimental evidence can be applied elsewhere under undocumented circumstances. In addition to that, almost all currently accepted theories of Evolution and Creation are unverifiable and often contradicted by reliable evidence. It becomes more interesting when concepts such a consciousness, a creator intelligence and soul are introduced as viable concepts, the scientists demand that they be detectable by experimentation.

Proper Science Education

The purpose of the Educational System dated back from the era of Pyramids in Egypt and Laws of Moses was to teach people to live. In the 20th and 21st Centuries the purpose of education as documented and perceived, is to teach students how to solve the problems of life, yet educators are simply propagating how to increase one’s entanglement in this material world by economic development and sensory enjoyment. How to use science and engineering to make us more secure and comfortable. CCTV cameras to monitor our environment, nuclear weapons to rule others who do have the technology, computer programming to trust a single micro chip with the lives of entire human race etc. We do not find a department in the universities which teaches what is the actual goal of life.  And what is the results of this.

1. We have taller buildings but shorter temples.

2. We spend more but earn less

3. We have wide freeway but narrower viewpoint.

4. We buy more but enjoy less.

5. We have bigger houses but smaller families.

6. We have more convenience but less time.

7. We have more degree by less sense.

8. We have multiplied our possessions but reduced our values.

9. We talk much, love too seldom and hate too often.

10. We have learned to make a living but not life.

11. We have added years to life but not life to years.

12. We have been all the way to the moon and back but have trouble crossing tract to meet new neighbours.

13. We have split the atom but not our prejudice.

14. We have higher income but lower morals.

15. These are times of all kinds of food but less nutrition.

16. More medicine but less health.

The Failure of Science

In mathematics, which underlies all other branches of science, the is an imaginary number “i” ( the square root of -1 ) is essential in for most complex theoretical calculations.  However this imaginary number cannot be proven by experimentation. It is also not possible to prove by experimentation the Third Law of Thermodynamics or Heisenberg’s Uncertainty  Principle. Yet these principles are absolutely essential in modern scientific theories.

In the beginning of the 19th Century, it was believed that atoms are the smallest particles in an element that cannot be subdivided. In the 20th Century, subatomic particles such as neutrons, protons and electrons were discovered. Newtonian mechanics was accepted as the scientific explanation of reality until it was discovered in the 20th Century that it failed to describe the motion of these subatomic particles. Quantum mechanics was devised to cope with this inadequacy. The Theory of relativity was also devised by Albert Einstein to help further explain fundamental concepts.

Because General Relativity and Quantum Mechanics appear to contradict each other, Quantum Field Theory was developed. So we can clearly see that the evolving theories of the scientists are constantly changing as they scramble to adjust these theories. They can never be perfect because the scientist themselves are imperfect and subject to the four defects of humans.. With our limited knowledge, tiny brains, limited experience and resources we cannot hope to understand the unlimited.

The Big Bang Theory

Having been cornered, scientists generally support the Big Bang Theory of creation, which postulates that in the beginning of creation all the matter in the universe was concentrated into a single point of mass at higher temperatures which them exploded producing super heated cloud of sub atomic particles. However this initial condition is mathematically indescribable. A point of infinitesimal circumference and infinite density is called a “singularity.” – an impossibility.

This means that scientists should be convicted of the crime of making unverifiable supernatural claims, just as what they accuse the transcendental saint of doing. Various Big Bang theories led to a stage of uniformly distributed gas which is expanding. Again, what happens after that is the subject of further speculation and has not been properly explained.

Life from Chemicals

Scientists have long theorized that life emerged from a primordial chemical soup without direction of any higher organizing principles. They theorize that simple molecules randomly combine into inconceivably complex organic compounds which again evolve into higher self-reproducing organisms. How any of this happens is yet to be explained. James Watson, co-discoverer od the DNA molecule wrote, “not only will the exact structure of most macromolecules within the cell remain unsolved, but their relative locations within cells may only be vaguely known”

The great question is: How can inert matter, acting according to simple physical laws alone generate the remarkable molecular machinery found in even the simplest cell?

The simplest of all!

Scientists claim that electrons in a conductor flow in the opposite direction to the flow of current. While current is the rate of flow of Charges. How can they be flowing in opposite directions?


Scientists are obsessed with the concept that complex life forms have evolved progressively form simple building blocks. However, direct experience shows just the opposite, that complex forms actually originate form even more complex forms.
I suggest that a body of knowledge does not exist which provides sufficient explanation of the nature and origin of the universe and living organisms that inhabit it.

Four Things we do wrong everyday that affect our health and the health of others.

It is with profound humility and absolute gratitude that I owe this post to Mrs Liezel Von Alleman. I spend one hour listening to this amazing lady as she expounded on the “Bright” things we do unknowingly that affect us and other people around us. Here are some of them;

1. Using Anti-bacterial Soap to wash our hands.
This is a bone of contention and i know many people will disagree with me however, the fact is that using antibacterial soaps will only make the bacteria resistant. Do the soaps have anti-biotics? Yes? Do they kill the bacteria? Arguable. Whenever you use the soap you normally rinse your hands with water right? Yes.
Now, what happens is that while rinsing your hands, you normally dilute the antibiotic in the soap and as a result, you just weaken the bacteria and make your hands smell nice. You do not only leave the bathroom with filthy hands but the weakened bacteria will be in touch with the dilute antibiotic and it will develop antibodies to fight the bacteria. This leads to the bacteria becoming resistant to the antibiotics. I will recommend you use alcohol because even at low concentrations the bugs will not survive.

2. Restaurant Menu
Yummy! The first thing that clicks in my mind with the word restaurant it the good food. Many of us eat in restaurants which is not bad. Well in reality we do not go there to get food alone but also billions of different types of bacteria. Okay think about it how many people enter a restaurant in a day? And what is the first thing they ask for after settling down? Menu & Cutlery on A Restaurant Table

Now you get it. However colourful and elementary the design is, with hundreds of people with different types of bacteria touching the menu and the warm favourable conditions at the restaurant allows the different bacteria to multiply and mutate rapidly. So when you go and touch the menu, pick up the bacteria, pass it to the next person on your table, shake hands and high fives etc. the cycle continues and we mix and share the different species and numbers of the bacteria and lastly, we wash our hands with anti-bacteria soap. Now, should we stop going to the restaurant? Exactly NO. If you really must touch the menu then use alcohol to clean your hands otherwise use drive thru or order food online.

3. Using antibiotics to treat cold or flu.
Flu is a normal occurrence we meet every time, during winter or rainy seasons we never miss to meet someone on the hallways and streets screaming achoooooooo!! or speaking with a different accent. It is a condition that is understandable sometimes however sometimes we normally take it to extremes by rushing to the doctor or pharmacy to buy antibiotics.
Now, we may think that we are very caring for our bodies that we getting medication whenever we are sick. But there are some few things I would like to address. One Flu caused by a virus antibiotics are made for bacterial diseases when you pile antibiotics in your body you are making your body resistant to these antibiotics and when you will need these antibiotics they will not work. Two, anti- means against while bio- means life just letting it out there. Now when you catch this flu; help your body fight the virus by staying in bed and prevent the spread of the virus. sick in bed

4. Coughing and sneezing
With the first three coughs and sneezes you normally feel shy and can feel everybody staring at you but after those, it becomes normally and you go ahead continuously. What you should realize is that when you sneeze you introduce millions of bacteria in to the air. I do not want to type the effects of spreading the bacteria causing new infections and multiple infections. That’s not the point, the most important thing is how do we sneeze or cough. Because we feel shy, we do not want to cough or sneeze with your mouth open: very considerate You want to cover your mouth but how?

The fastest thing that is available to cover ourselves is our hands!!

Well you may save yourself from embarrassment but jus are just transferring millions of germs to your pretty hands. It does not end there because everything you touch will be infected; door knobs, pens, books, computer mouse, phones and to make it worse SHAKE hands!!! Think about the things you touch in an hour, they will all be infected.

The solution is to keep your hands as far as possible from your mouth try this.
Remember also DO NOT cover your mouth and nose while sneezing, the high pressure inside can blow off your eardrum or pop out your eyes

A Tramp with his Cigarettes


A tramp, unable to afford cigarettes, collects butt ends. But he was man of substance and therefore he refuses to smoke the ends. Instead he shreds them until he has enough tobacco to make a real cigarette. When he has collected seven ends he has enough tobacco to make one whole cigarette. One lucky day he finds four cigarette ends  in the gutter, and the an additional eight in the ashtray of a parked car, three in an old paint tin and five in the lobby of a hotel. He has enough money for a drink and manages to collect fifteen ends in the pub. He discovers four in the social security office, six more on his way home, and four in the pocket of an old coat when he gets there. How many whole cigarettes was he able to smoke that day?

Storing Wind and Solar Energy in Chemical Bonds


Efficient energy consumption, environmental awareness and renewable energy technologies alone cannot succeed in substantially reducing greenhouse emission and energy crisis in Africa. The booming economic growth across the continent continues to tremendously boost the demand for energy- more coal for producing electricity and powering new factories, more oil for fuelling new cars, more natural gas for heating new homes emerging from the increasing population- carbon emission and energy crisis will keep escalating despite the introduction of more energy-efficient vehicles, buildings and appliances and even adoption of new renewable energy sources. To thwart this startling trend of global warming and energy predicament on the continent, new technologies must be developed to store the superfluous nature’s energy in clean, sustainable and cheap techniques.

Renewable Energies technologies were suddenly and briefly fashionable three decades ago in response to the oil embargoes of the 1970’s, but the interest and support were not sustained. In the recent years, there have been dramatic improvements in the performance and affordability of solar cells, wind turbines and biofuels, this paved way for mass commercialization of renewable energy. Apart from being environmental friendly, the high and wildly fluctuating oil prices and natural gas have made renewable alternatives more appealing. However, were a very much aware of the setbacks that come packaged with renewable energy technologies: -expensive and delicate photovoltaic cells make the technology unattainable for many, the fluctuating wind energy makes the endeavour unreliable and the uneven distribution of these natural resources on the continent – these and other setbacks have attributed to the extremely low percent contribution of renewable energy to the continent’s energy grid.

We are living in an era where opportunities for renewable energy are unprecedented, making this the ideal time to advance clean, sustainable and pocket-size power for decades to come. The nature has provided ad lib energy for the living organisms to use, it is our obligation to tap, store and utilize this energy. This endeavour will require a long-time investment of scientific, economic and political resources.

The smiling Sun’s power:  

The Sun produces an amazing amount of light and heat through nuclear reactions. The process that produces the sun’s energy is called nuclear fusion where two atoms come together to produce a heavier atom, in result, energy and other tiny elementary are produced. (Randolph, 2009)

In just one second the Sun emits more energy than humans have used in the last 10 000 years. Amazingly, the sun has been shining relatively steadily for the last 4.6 billion years!! (Randolph, 2009)

The amount of sun’s energy that reaches the earth’s surface is mind blowing. Relatively, more energy from the sun hits the planet in one hour than all the energy consumed on earth for a whole year.

In the 20th Century, human beings devised technologies to tap and utilize the sun’s power to produce electricity using solar cells also known as photovoltaic cells. Using semiconductors they are able to convert sunlight into electric current. However, solar power provides just a tiny slice of the World’s electricity: their global generating capacity of 5000 MW is only 0.15 percent of the total generating capacity from all sources. Yet sunlight could potentially supply 5 000 times as much the world currently consumes (Kammen, 2006).

A lot of African Countries have dived into investing in commercial solar energy harnessing to supplement the country’s energy requirement. For Instance Kenya is the global leader in the number of solar power systems installed per capita but not the number of watts added (Kammen, 2006).

Some of the major impediments affecting the solar energy harnessing include but not limited to: the photovoltaic cells used in making the solar panels are relatively expensive to manufacture rendering it impossible for most people on the continent to adopt the technology; the solar panels are also very delicate and fragile.

The above mentioned setbacks have considerably reduced the output of solar energy harnessing to a very low percentage.

Whereas the potential is enormous, if we need to increase the output we get from the sun and because of the intermittent nature of solar radiation as an energy source, excess solar energy produced during sunny periods must be stored. Insulated tanks commonly store this energy in hot water. Batteries often store excess electric energy from voltaic device. However, both methods are bulky and have low efficiency. One possibility is storing the excess solar-generated electric energy in chemical bonds.

Energy is required to break chemical bonds and also the same energy is released when those bonds are made.

Mind Blowing wind power:

Technological advances are blowing new life into an energy source long tapped by humans: the wind. The first windmills for grinding grain appeared in Persia just over 1 000 years ago. The technology spread through Asia to Europe finding other applications, including pumping water for irrigation and drinking in the America during late 19th Century. However, in 1970s, Danish researchers applied advanced engineering and materials to wind-power generation (Flavin and Dunn, 1998). The technology emerged as potentially serious competitor to fossil fuels. Currently in Northern German, the state of Schleswig-Holstein meets one quarter of its annual electricity demands with more than 2400 wind turbines, and in certain seasons wind power generates more than half the state’s electricity (Kammen, 2006).

Africa has a very high potential for wind power and the technology might be a masterpiece on solving Africa’s energy crisis and global warming. The continent experiences on average, 7.73 ms-1 of wind velocity with regions experiencing outliers of 9.4 ms-1 of wind velocity annually. These are very promising figures and are effectively competing with huge world wind farms in Denmark, Spain, Portugal among others.

From the figure above, most part of the continent have an average wind speed between 5.9 ms-1 and 6.9ms-1 with distinguished regions having extremely high wind speeds of between 8.6ms-1 and even higher than 9.4ms-1 .

Even though we are experiencing such high wind speeds, it still remains as potential as a very tiny percent of the continent’s power grid is contributed by wind power. On a global scale, wind power has a capacity of generating 60 000MW of electric power however 0.5 of the world’s electricity is produced by wind turbines (Kammen, 2006).

The major hindrance of investing in wind power is its reliability. Running a whole national or regional electricity grid on wind power is a gamble since wind constantly changes in speed, direction and even intensity. Not only is unevenly distributed but also easily distracted by landscape and human activities like infrastructure.

But on the other hand, Energy is neither created nor destroyed, but can be changed from one form to the other (Einstein). This means that one of the ways of maximally utilize this enormous wind and solar energy is to convert it into another form of energy which is easily tapped, stored and transported from one region to another. In this way, we are going to revolutionize the whole idea behind renewable energy technologies. By shifting our focus from using the renewable sources to power our factories, homes, cars etc. into tapping the grand energy and storing it for decades to come; we are creating a universe with clean, sustainable and easy energy.

Hydrogen gas as a fuel:

Hydrogen is the first chemical element on the periodic table that exists as a gas at room temperature. Hydrogen gas is odorless, tasteless, colorless, and highly flammable. When hydrogen gas burns in air, it forms water and that is where it got its name which means “water former” (Flavin and Seth, n.d)

As the world succumbs to the threats of fossil fuel exhaustion and extreme environmental hazards resulting from exploitation and use of fossil fuels, attention has been drawn to this gas as a source of energy. Liquid hydrogen was first used to fuel spaceships due to its low density and high energy content.

The major advantage of Hydrogen is that it stores approximately 2.6 times the energy per unit mass as gasoline, and the volume for a given amount of energy. For instance, a 15 gallon automobile gasoline tank contains 90 pounds of gasoline. The corresponding hydrogen tank would be 60 gallons, but the hydrogen would weigh only 34 pounds. (Nelsonville, n.d) As a result, 1 kilogram of Hydrogen gas when burnt produces 118mm Btu* of energy while 1 gallon of gasoline which is equivalent to 3.785 liters produces between 116 and 124mm Btu when burnt in addition to massive CO2, SO2, and PbO among other harmful gases.

At this stage are carrying 116mm Btu of power in a tiny 70.99cm-3 of space compared to 3.785 liters of gasoline. Meaning, if we have a five gallon tank gasoline automobile replaced with hydrogen, it will be able to carry:

= 30 925. 60 mm Btu

Compared to maximum 620 mm Btu power produced by a gasoline engine, hydrogen engine will be able to power the automobile over 50 more times!!

As a result of Hydrogen’s low density, high-energy content, environmental friendliness and small size, the demand for Hydrogen has been rising tremendously as the world diverge its attention to this gas as a fuel.

Hydrogen Production:

Globally, about half of the hydrogen produced is used to produce ammonia while the other half is used to convert heavy petroleum sources into lighter fractions suitable for use as fuels. A very little percentage of hydrogen produced is used for commercial fuel use since commercial hydrogen production is a heavy resource investment. (Nelsonville, n.d)

Currently, a large portion of hydrogen gas is produced from fossil fuels as shown in the figure below.


   Some of the major commercial methods used include:

1.      Steam Methane Reforming

At 700 – 1100° C and in presence of a nickel catalyst, steam reacts with methane to yield carbon monoxide and Hydrogen.

CH4 (g) + H2O (g) CO (g) + 3H2 (g) + Energy

This method produces a carbon monoxide and also the reaction is endothermic and requires a lot of heat to start.

2.      Coal Gasification

This is a well-established commercial technology much competitive where oil and natural gas are easily available.

Here coal replaces natural gas and oil as the primary feedstock for hydrogen production. Again this method goes back to the exploitation of fossil fuels.

3.      Partial Oxidation Hydrocarbons

This process is used to produce Hydrogen from heavy hydrocarbons such as diesel fuel and residual oil. In this technology, methane and other hydrocarbons in natural are reacted with a limited amount of oxygen (typically, from air) that is not enough to completely oxidize the hydrocarbons to carbon dioxide and water where heat is evolved.

4.      Thermochemical Production of Hydrogen

When water is heated to above 2500 °C, it separated into oxygen and hydrogen in a process known as thermolysis. However, at such high temperatures, it is difficult to prevent the oxygen and hydrogen from recombining to form water.

5.      Sulphur-Iodine Thermochemical Cycle

In this method, sulphur dioxide is fed into the cycle as chemical catalysts in thermolysis.

I2(s) + SO2 (g) + 2H2O (l) 2HI (l) + H2SO4 (aq)

The hydrogen iodide and sulphuric acid are separated usually by distillation

H2SO4. H20 + SO2 + O2

Hydrogen is generated from Iodine.

6.      Biomass Production of Hydrogen

Gasification of biomass could be a way of extracting hydrogen from organic sources. The biomass is converted into a gas through high-temperature gasifying. The hydrogen rich vapour is condensed into pyrolysis oils which can be steam reformed to generate hydrogen. This process has resulted in Hydrogen yields of 12% – 17% hydrogen by weight of dry biomass.

7.      Photo biological

This method involves using sunlight, a biological component, catalysts and an engineered system. Specific organisms, algae and bacteria produce hydrogen as a by-product of their metabolic processes. Currently, this technology is still in the research and development stage and the theoretical sunlight conversion efficiencies have been estimated up to 24%.

Electrolysis of Water to Produce Hydrogen

Much of the above outlined technologies in Hydrogen production involve either use extreme complicated technologies or still use fossil fuels to produce hydrogen. However, electrolysis of water presents itself as a clean, simple and environmental friendly technique of hydrogen production.

Electrolysis is the technical name for using electricity to split water into its constituent elements, hydrogen and oxygen (Nelsonville, n.d).

The splitting of water is accomplished by passing a DC current through water. The electricity enters the water at the cathode, a negatively charged terminal, passes through the water and exists via the anode, positively charged terminal. Electrolysis produces very pure oxygen compared to all the other methods and this hydrogen can be used in electronics, pharmaceutical and food industries.

From the effectiveness, simplicity and environmental friendliness accompanied by electrolysis, it may be termed as the best option of hydrogen production of which it is. However, it has one major setback.

As the demand for Hydrogen continues to rise globally, the need for producing clean, adequate and sustainable Hydrogen in a cheap, easy and environmental way emerges.

During electrolysis, 237.13kJ of electrical energy is required to dissociate one mole of water.

H20(l) H2 (g) + O2 (g)

2 grams of water produce 2 grams of Hydrogen.

1g water  = 0.0556 moles.

2kg water    = 111.2 moles of water

Electrical energy required to split 2kg of water which will in turn produce 2kg of hydrogen

 the speculated global hydrogen demands stands at 400 000 000kg by the year 2020.

For us to produce the 400 000 000kg of Hydrogen in order to serve the demand, we require over 5.9 billion mega joules  of electrical energy!!

Africa’s current energy demand

A research done by Centre for Global Development in the year 2012 shows that 600 million people that is 70% of the Africa’s population of sub-Saharan Africa are without electricity. (Moss and Cleave 2013).


The analysis in the graph above  shows that we have a very long way to go to cater for our domestic and industrial electricity demands. This means that bringing in another electricity consumer industry which will require 9 of electrical energy from the national grid is unthinkable.

Water, the Golden resource

As much as we are thinking about the electricity to be used in this process, we do not need to forget the fact that water is another parameter that needs to be factored in.

From every kilogram of hydrogen produced, 1000cm3 of water is used

For our ultimate goal of 400 000 000kg of Hydrogen

We are going to consume 400 million litres of water

The question is where are we going to get this water? A research done by United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA) in the year 2007 brings to our attention disturbing results on global water scarcity;

  1. About 700 million people in 43 countries suffer today from water scarcity.
  2. By 2025, 1.8 billion people will be living in regions with absolute water scarcity, and two thirds of the world’s population could be living under water stressed conditions.
  3. With the existing climate change scenario, almost half of the world’s population will be living in areas of high water stress by the year 2030, including between 75 million and 250 million people in Africa. In addition, water scarcity in some arid and semi-arid places will displace between 24 million and 700 million people.
  4. Sub-Saharan Africa has the largest number of water-stressed countries of any region as shown in the map below (Human Development Report 2006).

However, a clue for this water crisis puzzle lies in this water distribution pie chart on fig 9


98% of the earth’s water source is salt water in the seas and the oceans. This water is untapped since it cannot be used for human consumption and even some industrial use because of its salts content. This is a great source of our 400 million litres of water required.

Pure water is a poor conductor of electricity and therefore a poor electrolyte. In the laboratory experiments, a little acid is normally used to help ionize the water. Sea water already contains dissolved ions which will help ionize the water in readiness for electrolysis.

The use of sea water in this process will not only save our planet’s small amount of fresh water but also help us tap into the huge virgin source of water.

When we consider electrolysis of seawater as a raw material for hydrogen production, it would be an obvious advantage to utilize these abundant saline water resources for electrolysis, rather than using fresh water (Abdel et al, 2010)

Some of the common ions present in sea water include:

H+, Ca2+, Mg2+, Na+, Ka+, Fe2+, Al3+ and sometimes Zn2+ and Cu2+ as the Cations and OH, Cl, SO42- , NO3, HCO3and sometimes F and NO2 as the ions.

Sea water electrolysis is the technology used in present practice for large-scale electrolytic hydrogen production. To produce hydrogen from seawater as a target product, an electrolysis production procedure can take three main routes:

  1. Electrolysis to give hydrogen, oxygen and alkalis
  2. Electrolysis to give hydrogen, oxygen, chlorine and alkalis.
  3.  Electrolysis to give hydrogen and sodium hypochlorite (NaClO).

In the electrolysis of sea water as a source of hydrogen, two options exist for the performance of the electrolysis process. The first option is to subject the water to total desalination to remove all dissolved salts and produce essential distilled water then the distilled water can then be subjected to electrolysis. The disadvantage of this approach are additional capital cost of water treatment and desalination system, and the environment problems arising from the need to dispose the residual salts removed during desalination. The advantages are the ability to develop a technology for direct electrolysis of sea water. (Abdel et al,2010).

The challenge now is to design an electrolyze system capable of utilizing sea water for direct electrolysis. It is probable that these systems could operate at low power density. The challenge is enormous, new technology must be developed to solve the probable corrosion and contamination problems and the evolution of undesirable electrochemical products such as chlorine. The advantages are possible lower capital cost and natural elimination of the waste brine which is only enriched with salts. It may be possible to recover economically significant quantities of the metals present in sea water, in particular magnesium in a form of magnesium hydroxide. (Abdel et al, 2010).

The sea water electrolyzes efficiently produce hypochlorite solution from chlorine generated chlorine which confirms the predominance of the production of chlorine at the anode over oxygen (Ravichandran et al, 2011). The two main factors contributing to the evolution of chlorine gas as the main anodic product rather than oxygen are reported to be as follows:

  1. First in un-buffered solution in solutions such as sea water, both oxygen and chlorine evolution which H+ as follows:

2H2O (g) O2 (g) + 4H+ (aq) + 4e

The chlorine generated at the anode undergoes immediate hydrolysis which also generates H+ as follows.

Cl2 + H2O HClO + Cl + H+

HClO ClO+ H+

2ClCl2 + 2e

(Abdel et al, 2010).

The pH at the anode surface becomes acidic during electrolysis, which favours chlorine evolution as it is independent of pH (Ravichandran et al, 2011).

  1. Although oxygen evolution should be the preferred evolution according to the thermodynamic potentials, this is only valid at zero current.

2H2O       4H+ + O2 (g) + 4e–           E = 1.23V

Nevertheless, oxygen evolution dominates under certain conditions which may be summarized as follows.

  1. Sea water electrolysis at very low current density (<mA/cm2).
  2. Operating the cell at far in excess of the limiting current for chlorine evolution.

On the other hand, the above two circumstances are impractical because sea water oxidation at low current density would require a very large electrode area, and electrolysis at above the limiting current would lead to IR heating and high power consumption, which would be uneconomical. (Ravichandran et al, 2011).

In that regard, if we have to use sea water oxidation as one of the ways of producing hydrogen since it is available in plentiful supply on the earth, we need to develop electrolyze systems that will be both economic and environmental friendly.

Science and Society: The necessary bond.

Study conducted by Yuri Osipov President, Russian Academy of sciences shows that the general public perceives science as a beneficial force in human affairs. At the same time, the research shows that public knowledge of scientific knowledge is extremely low. These results clearly show the gap between scientists and the general public. This gap has been made and widened in the following ways.
Bruce Lewenstein of Cornell University says although scientists perceive science as open investigation of nature, public perceptions of science have more practical images in mind; public perceptions make science look like an applied field that uses knowledge of natural world to yield specific practical benefits. This misunderstanding in most cases tremendously reduces support both practically and relatively as the public will be waiting to see tangible and practical goods produced while the scientist for instance will prove a law or principle. For instance, talk about Neil Bohr and the wright brothers, Neil Bohr’s research in the structure and the configuration of the atom has opened up a lot of research and understanding of the atom on the scientist side, however on the side, the public fails to understand why he is such a celebrity in the science world. The case is different with the wright brothers, for everyone who has ever heard, seen or used a plane, once he/she is told about the wright brothers who invented it he/she will automatically connect them as great scientists, same applies to the likes of Alexander Graham, Benjamin Franklin, Leonardo da Vinci and even Steve Jobs. The public needs to understand that science is not all about creating machines and medicine and also the creation of those stuff comes from research of abstract chemical and physical processes as well.
As much as science is well understood by scientists themselves, they cannot create any impact with the knowledge without involving the public. In his interview with Science for the Twenty-First Century on 26th June 1999 in Budapest, Zhang Kaixun the vice president, CAST Institute of Automation for Machine-Building in China says that the public perception of science had direct bearing on social progress and national prosperity. This means that it is through the popularization of science that all scientific achievements without exception produce an enormous impact on the society. A close look at research from International Organization of Scientific Research suggests that developing countries suffer a permanent haemorrhage of trained scientists who have achieved an international level of professional competence and end up emigrating not because of salaries even though they are in about the lowest in their local scale but because of opportunities of funding for their laboratories, libraries and field work.
An interesting fact is that science carries a lot of prestige in developing countries. However, this prestige has no correlation for social support for scientific research and scientists as a result; developing countries invest less in science and education both in absolute and relative terms. There is even an internally sanctioned ideology that developing countries should not “waste” their money funding research as exemplified by the World Bank Document Argentina: From Stagnation to Growth of the early 90’s. To make the matter even worse the globalisation of markets seems to reinforce this idea that why waste time and resources in doing research, when you can freely import advanced technologies at international prices.
This popular ignorance about science from the general public can be found even in the higher government officials for instance the Crotoxina Affair in which a few doctors persuaded the Argentine government that they had found a cure for cancer when some responsible academics warned that this was a scientific hoax and the doctors were simply ignored. However, ten years later, the affair drags on. (Yriart, 1999)
Based on the above effects, it is critical to note that our world today is confronted with the serious problem of public perception of science, which is exerting an influence upon the mankind on an enormous scale as never before from economic prosperity, social progress and all individuals welfare. However science is getting farther and farther beyond peoples common sense. It’s getting difficult even for those with the richest imaginative power to get an exact understanding of modern science and the changes brought about it. The contradiction between functions of science and the lack of knowledge has aroused attention and concern among more and more people, who consider it to be a new challenge to the world today. (Yriart, 1999)
Having outlined the effects and issues at stake, it is very fruitful to bridge the gap between the scientists and the general public and one of the most prolific ways is by creating public science centres. These are exhibition and activity centres devoted to explaining science to the general public. Typically, these centres would use interactive exhibits involving the public in active experimentation; this provides the visitors with a unique and thoughtfully devised opportunity to enter a dialogue with nature itself. While most of current exhibits of science centres are often described as ‘hands on’ they should certainly aim to be ‘minds on’ starting intellectual processes, solving problems and providing answers. These science centres will also enhance motivation of school children to pursue science at higher levels. The ultimate growth in size of science centre industry will result in more acquaintance of the public with simple scientific process which advances into deep scientific technologies.
